Selection & Installation

Kit number 4059DSK

The image above shows a balance weight positioned between two of four u-joint cover mounting pads. Clearance over the balance weights is one of two reasons we use these interchangeable rubber-like pads. The other reason is to provide tight cover mounting for multiple drive line diameters. Instructions are included with each cover; but this is a new product category, so some things are worth repeating. Check the steps below to get the right part number (it's really easy) and make sure your covers are mounted securely.

The most popular placement of our covers is on the driveshaft right behind the carrier bearing, grease splatter from this u-joint makes a visible mess on the frame, tanks, sleeper or cab. Here's how to select the right cover set for driveshaft mounting.

Step #1 - Measure It

Did you know there are 32 driveshaft tube diameters common to heavy trucks? No worries, we've simplified these into just 2 driveshaft groupings. If your driveshaft diameter is between 4.00" & 4.590" your part number begins with 4059. If your driveshaft measures between 4.625" & 5.200" your part number begins with 4652. Next up, U-Joints..

Step #2 - Determine the U-Joint Series

Likewise, there are a number of common U-Joint part numbers, and we've also simplified these into just 2 groupings:

  • Standard H-D (1700 series)

  • X-Large H-D (1800 series).

If your truck has 1610, 1710, SPL170, SPL250, SPL350 or RPL20 U-Joints, these are 1700 size series & your part number will end with DSK. If you have 1760, 1810 or RPL25 U-Joints, these are 1800 size series & your part number will end with DLK.

That's it, just 2 things to know. With only 4 possible part numbers, it's easy to figure out the kit that fits. Now, let's install it..

Tip #1 - Make it tight!

Now is the time to be picky. Your Protector U-Joint Cover kit for driveshafts was delivered with either 7 (in 4059 kits) or 8 (in 4652 kits) sets of 4 mounting pads marked for respective shaft O.D. Carefully re-measure the driveshaft tube O.D. and select the closest corresponding mount pads. The mount pads are designed to deflect slightly (squish) as the cover bolts are tightened. When properly installed, the cover pads will not slip on the driveshaft. Give a light tug on the bell end, if you see slippage swap 2 of the 4 pads (opposite one-another for balance) to the next smallest diameter marked on the pads. Re-tighten the cover and re-check for a firm mount.

Tip #2 - Prepare for Re-Use

Protector U-Joint Covers are bolted together using stainless nut-inserts and zinc plated bolts. We chose dissimilar metals to reduce the chance of thread galling but anti-seize is great idea when you're installing the cover. In case threads do become stuck and the insert begins to rotate, you can use a hex wrench in the open end of the nut-insert to hold it while removing the bolt.

Tip #5 - Slip-Yoke & Yoke Shaft Models

We offer 2 kits that mount on Slip-Yokes (SYK suffix) & 2 kits for Yoke Shafts (YSK suffix). These have fewer diameters & all of them are accommodated so, once you know the U-Joint series, you're ready to order.

Keep Grease in. Keep Junk Out.

Protector U-Joint Covers, keep the grease off your truck, the roadway below and.. they protect against FOD in landfills, quarries and fields.
